When you have a tooth that needs to be removed, it is common for your dentist to use the assistance of dental extraction tools. These tools allow for the safe, and complete, removal of a tooth.

Once a dentist begins the process of removing a tooth, there are a number of dental extraction tools that can be used along the way. While some tools work together, each tool serves a specific purpose when removing a tooth.

The first method a dentist may use is one that includes an elevator. An elevator looks similar to a small screwdriver and is wedged between the tooth and the bone surrounding it. If a tooth still refuses to be removed, a dentist has a few more dental extraction tools that are useful. Some tools help a dentist section a tooth. By sectioning a tooth, a dentist is splitting the tooth into pieces and removing a section at a time.

Other additional methods include drilling the area surround the tooth so that a section of the bone can be removed. This type of surgical extraction is more common for teeth that have not completely come in or that have broken under the gum line.
